Camping at Milan Hill State Park
My name is Rod Davies, I'm the manager of the park, and I do my best to keep the place looking nice and clean. I think the solitude of the sites and the quietness of the park is a big, big thing for this park. It's something that draws a lot of people, and to me, I don't know if they can really find that anywhere else.
The campground of the park consists of ten sites. There's six sites that are tent sites, and those sites all have tent platforms on them. Some are 12x12, some are 16x16, so some of the larger tents.
We also have four yurts, and yurts are a novelty in the park, people love them. Once you open up that door to the yurt, you'll find a yurt. It's 16 feet in diameter, and most of the yurts, right on the back wall, the far wall from the door, is a set of twin bunk beds.
And on one side or the other, it gets moved around a lot, there is a full-size fold-out futon, and on the other side is a futon chair. And I have a little logbook in there that people can take and write their experiences. So, I read those constantly to see what people like and don't like, and what they want, and everything.
And of course, overhead you have your what's-the-last-doll, which people really like to be able to watch the stars, you can see the lightning on a stormy day or a stormy night, especially. I've had people that have decided that camping is not what they want to do, but they want to get out into nature. The yurt's perfect for them, because they've got the bunks, they've got the futon that they can sit on or sleep on.
They can be outside and have a fire, but still have the security and dryness of a yurt when it starts to rain. And the yurt is a perfect thing for that. It's comfortable, it's clean, and it's just easy to work with.
And then we have our picnic area, which has a swing set, and we have a pavilion. The pavilion is rentable for people who wish to have a party. And we have the fire watch tower, which you can climb to the observation deck just below the cabin.
And you can see the mountains of Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Canada from up there. If you get up there on a nice, chilly morning, and it's a clear sky, the view is just unbelievable, because then you'll see all the mountaintops sticking out above the clouds. All the clouds have settled down, and that's what they call an undercast.
And it just looks like you're surrounded by a lake. You're on an island in the middle of nowhere. It's just stunning.
It's just a great place, a great park. I love it.
