OHRVing in New Hampshire is one of the state’s most popular forms of summer recreation. With 1,000 miles of OHRV trails throughout the state, it’s easy to see why.

While there are a number of trails on state owned or managed land that are maintained by the New Hampshire Bureau of Trails, the majority of trails are on private land. 70% of New Hampshire land is privately owned. Private land trails are maintained by the local snowmobile clubs. The clubs are responsible for obtaining landowner permission and maintaining the trails based on their wishes. It is essential that snowmobilers respect landowners’ wishes and their land. NO RESPECT = NO TRAILS

New Hampshire State law provides certain protections for landowners who open their land to those using it for outdoor recreation.

OHRVers can only ride on trails designated and signed as a OHRV trail. Riders should familiarize themselves with signage and state laws.

There is no digital OHRV map produced by the state at this time, but plans are in the works to generate one in the future. For now, clubs sell paper maps through their individual websites for their club systems. NH Off Highway Vehicle Association (NHOHVA) has a NH state map to show where the trail systems are in general throughout the state.
 

In New Hampshire OHRVs must be registered when operated anywhere other than the owner’s property. Riding is only allowed on approved trails or on someone’s land that has provided the rider with written permission. There are no additional trail user fees in N.H.

Registrations can be obtained in person at authorized registration agents throughout the state. They may also be obtained in person from the New Hampshire Fish & Game Headquarters, or by calling Fish & Game at (603) 271-4300.

Current registration fees may be accessed here. Fees are reduced for both resident and non-resident OHRVers if they are a member of an OHRV club. To learn more about joining a club contact the club that maintains the trails in the area you ride.

Registration fees in New Hampshire are split between two state agencies, NH Fish and Game and the NH Dept. of Natural and Cultural Resources, Division of Parks and Recreation’s Bureau of Trails. In addition, $1 from each registration goes into the Fish & Game Search and Rescue Fund, $5 from each registration goes to the registration agent, and $2 from each registration goes to the vendor of the electronic registration system.

NH Fish and Game is responsible for the administration of the OHRV registration program, OHRV safety education, and law enforcement out on the trails.

The majority of monies the Bureau of Trails receives are returned to the local snowmobile clubs through the Bureau’s Grant-In-Aid Program. For OHRV clubs, there is one grant per year to provide funds for OHRV trail construction and maintenance (including bridge building/maintenance), updating or replacement of trail grading equipment, and grading reimbursement help with fuel costs of grading trails.

New Hampshire’s OHRV trail signs have been created based on international standards for the safety of riders, as well as the rest of the public.
 
Why? 
Because who wants to be out on the trail lost? It’s not a good feeling when your gas is getting low and you don’t know where you are or how far away the pumps are. Or what if a rider experiences a medical emergency and needs to let help know their location? And riders should always be able to tell if they are still on an authorized trail system, or have taken an incorrect turn.

It is the rider’s responsibility to familiarize themselves with trail signs and follow direction of them while using New Hampshire’s trail system.

OHRV clubs should keep in mind that trail users may not be familiar with their trail system and sign appropriately and adequately. The Bureau of Trails (BOT) has created Trail Signing Guidelines to assist clubs in knowing where and how to post trail signs. The BOT urges all clubs to follow these guidelines and to use the signs supplied by the Bureau so that trails are uniformly marked throughout the State.

Remember to respect landowners and stay on designated trails! Without landowners' permission, there would be no trail system!

Trail Status: OPEN. The connectors from the Warren fish hatchery- to the DOT shed in Wentworth will close a half hour after sunset on 10/31. This means all parking and trail access from Wentworth will be closed. The Warren trail system will remain open with limited parking available at the bottom of Dan's land (off Lund Lane, across from the ball field). The rest of the trail system will close on the first plowable snowstorm.

Sugar River Recreational Rail Trail (Newport to Claremont)
Trail Status: OPEN year-round.

Parking: Newport - Located next to the Newport Recreation Department. From the town center, head ¼ mile north on Route 10, turn left onto Belknap Avenue, parking is located 1/10 of a mile from this turn; OR, Claremont - Located at the western terminus of the trail on the South side of Routes 11 and 103, 1.7 miles west of the Newport/Claremont town line.
Trail Information: A multi-use rail trail owned by the State of New Hampshire, open year-round for use by ATVs (50" Maximum width) and TBs, has two historic covered bridges and follows the Sugar River. Rockingham Recreational Rail Trail - Fremont Branch (Derry to Fremont)

Parking: Fremont - Located across from the Fremont town library by the intersection of Routes 107 and 111A, OR, Derry - Route 102 to Derry Village Traffic Circle, go East on East Derry Road, go South on Warner Hill Road, parking located on North side of the trail.
Trail Information: A multi-use rail trail owned by the State of New Hampshire, open year-round for use by ATVs (50" maximum width) and TBs. Winter OHRV use is only from Route 28 in Derry to Main Street in Epping. DO NOT leave the rail trail and ride on the public snowmobile trail system - not allowed. The trail passes through wetlands and forest. The New Hampshire ATV Club works collaboratively on maintenance with the NH Bureau of Trails.
