About the Park

White Lake State Park offers some of the best swimming in the White Mountain region. The park lies along the shore of White Lake, which is an example of a typical glacial lake. During the Ice Age, the advance and eventual retreat of the ice sheet scoured the landscape and created depressions. Those depressions eventually filled with meltwater from the glaciers to form most of the lakes in the northeastern US, including the Great Lakes.
Guests are welcome to enjoy a leisurely walk around the lake on a well-maintained foot path while looking for loons or signs of beaver activity, try their hand at the good trout fishing the lake provides or check out one of our types of boat rentals. The park offers a day-use area, group areas, and a campground with family campsites as well as youth group sites.

  • Due to a staffing shortage, lifeguards may not be present at the White Lake State Park beach.
  • On nice weekends and holidays, the beach will most likely sell-out in the morning hours. Once the beach area reaches capacity additional beach goers cannot be admitted due to safety concerns.
  • Campers will also not be allowed to "claim" picnic tables or areas on the beach/picnic area prior to our daily opening. Staff will clear all trash and items left on the beach each morning during their morning cleaning of the beach.

Swimming and Camping at White Lake State Park

My favorite experience here at White Lake is usually in the morning when it’s really quiet, and I can hear the loons. If I don’t hear them, I’m watching them swim along the lake. The smell of the pine in the early morning, when the sun’s just coming up—it’s so primitive in a way, and that’s what I love.

When you come to White Lake State Park, we have a crystal-clear lake that’s shallow for a long way out. We’re all wooded, in a pitch pine forest, which is a nationally registered area. We also have a hiking trail around the lake.

Kids enjoy riding their bicycles all around the campground—there are many little roads and places to go. You can swim, and we have picnic areas here. There’s a store on the beach that has every kind of candy and ice cream you could ever want.

We also rent boats—kayaks, canoes, paddleboats, and paddleboards. It’s a really nice, cozy, country setting.

At night, the sunsets are to die for—it’s just wonderful.

We have about 200 campsites here, give or take. Most sites are wooded, with trees between each site, so they’re a little bit cozy. We have sites on the lake where you can hear the loons at night and see the water.

We don’t have any hookups here, but we do have dumping stations. So if you bring your camper or pop-up, you can use the dumping station and then go back to your site.

We have two bathroom facilities in each campground—one has showers and one doesn’t—and we also have a shower building at the reservation office in the main parking lot.

At the campground store, we have spatulas, marshmallows, sleeping bags, tents—you name it. You could probably buy everything you need to camp right here.

We have people who come every year, and it’s so cool to meet them year after year. They remember you, and I’m beginning to remember all the different campers and families. That’s really special because they reminisce about when they were here as children, and now they’re here with their own families.

When you come here, you kind of step back in time—and that is so cool about being here at White Lake State Park.
