Monadnock State Park welcomes new facility expansion project

NH State Parks will host a ribbon cutting celebration for the expansion and renovation of the toilet building at the Monadnock State Park headquarters at 116 Poole Road Jaffrey, NH at 1 p.m. on Oct. 4. The public is invited.

On October 31, 2018 the NH Governor and Executive Council approved a contract with Seppala Construction Co. Inc., Rindge, NH, for the Main Toilet Building Addition at Monadnock State Park. Work began on the project in November 2018. Design and management of the project was administered jointly by Department of Natural and Cultural Resources Planning and Development Office and by the NH Division of Public Works.

The new facility will double the number of toilet fixtures of the old facility and add an accessible family bathroom. The heated addition will allow year-round use to address the increase in winter hiking at the park. The addition includes indoor space for hikers to prepare gear and the building’s design allows future expansion to include a visitor center in the future.

Funding for the Monadnock building renovations and expansion was made possible through $127,000 in Capital Budget Funds appropriated by the NH Legislature, $318,000 by NH Division of Parks and Recreation from state entrance fees and a $443,608 Federal Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) grant.

“This project is a great example of how federal, state and local efforts can work to improve outdoor recreational opportunities in New Hampshire,” said Sarah Stewart, Commissioner NH Department of Natural and Cultural Resources. “Land and Water Conservation Fund grant projects at Mount Monadnock have a long history of supporting outdoor activities and recreation attractions on the mountain.”

The construction of the toilet building is one of three toilet bathhouse projects completed by NH Division of Parks and Recreation in 2019. Jenness State Beach and Umbagog Lake State Park also added new bathhouses this summer. Mount Monadnock, at 3165 feet, is one of the most popular climbing sites in the world. Monadnock has become a standard geological term used for any singular mountain that rises above the surrounding plain. The park is comprised of lands owned by the State, the Town of Jaffrey and the Society for the Protection of NH Forests, who have protected much of the acreage on the mountain over the years.
