About the Park
Gardner Memorial Wayside Park is part of Gile State Forest, which spans 6,675 acres. The entrance to the Wayside Park is located on the Springfield/Wilmot line. There is a dirt parking lot and a picnic area with two picnic tables next to a brook. The small bridge over Kimpton Brook leads to the Butterfield Pond Trail and the Mill Site Trail. The Butterfield Pond Trail is 0.5 mile to Butterfield Pond, and travels 0.9 mile around the pond. The short Mill Site Trail travels 0.1 mile to an old mill site where you can see remnants of a stone foundation. At the entrance to the Wayside Park, there is a memorial to Walter C. Gardner II, whose father established Gile State Forest.
