The restroom trailers and showers will remain on site for a little bit as we shake down the new systems. Many thanks to our guests for their patience as we get the new facility operating.

The campground redevelopment project has been delayed until after Labor Day due to high construction pricing. The Division is working to phase the project and to decrease the scope to bring the project in-line with the budget. The Umbagog Lake State Park base camp campsites will be available for reservations June 16, 2017 through September 5, 2017, after Labor Day availability will be coordinated with construction schedules. We look forward to seeing you this summer!

The Division and its design consultant The H.L. Turner Group Inc. have been at work finalizing the floor plan, exterior elevations and site plan for the new visitor center. Site improvements will include a new dump station, parking lot redevelopment, road reconstruction, improved waterfront RV sites and marina upgrades. Note:
Umbagog Lake basecamp campsites and cabins are closed for the 2017 camping season. The remote campsites are open for camping and guests will check in at basecamp at the current office cabin. Background
The Division of Parks and Recreation has owned property on Umbagog Lake since 1966 and with the addition of the campground in 1998 a developed/direct gateway to the lake was secured for recreation. When the Division purchased the campground from its the private owners, Jim and Carolyn Willard, not much had changed since the site was first developed in the mid-1940’s.

The last 18 years of state ownership has seen steady improvement to the basecamp area with upgrades to electrical, water and septic systems, however, there has been limited investment in the facilities. The popularity of the remote sites has put added pressure on the boat launch and marina area. The campground and remote sites enjoy some of the highest occupancy in the State Park System.

In July 2015 the NH State Legislature appropriated funding for a new toilet building at the park. A program of work has been developed by park staff to include:
  • Park Office with reception desk, store and outside gathering space on a covered porch.
  • Upgrades to the marina to make launching more efficient.
  • New parking configuration to accommodate remote site vehicles and extra campground vehicles.
  • Men’s and women’s toilet rooms.
  • Family bathroom (1).
  • Shower stalls (4).
  • Laundry area.
  • Dishwashing area.
The division has been working with design consultants to develop alternatives and design a new park facility and marina improvements. Preliminary design should be available by the New Year. Construction is expected to begin in May 2017.

Looking Ahead
The construction is going to have a major impact on the base camp area. Space will be needed to stage equipment and materials and what space we have remaining will need to serve as parking for the remote sites. Until further notice, Umbagog Lake basecamp campsites and cabins will be closed for camping in 2017. Remote campsites will be open for camping and guests will still check in at basecamp. We plan on working with the contractor to try and make selected basecamp sites and cabins open later in the season depending upon how construction progresses.
