Rhododendrons generally grow in large colonies. This 16-acre stand is considered the largest and most vigorous of the nineteen such clusters in central and northern New England. Most at home in the North Carolina mountains, the rhododendrons in New Hampshire and Maine are at the northern limit of their range.
National Landmark properties are selected to protect and illustrate the nation's diversified natural resources. Like all National Natural Landmarks, the rhododendrons here give us a clue to our region's past and an example of the natural diversity that makes up our New England landscape.
