Winter Recreation

Camping
Winter camping provides an opportunity for winter adventure that is close to home. Many campers utilize camping facilities at Monadnock State Park for honing their winter backcountry skills, while still taking advantage of the convenience provided at a maintainted campground. Hunters can also use the campground as a base to take advantage of hunting opportunities in the state forests located in the immediate area, as many other campgrounds are closed during popular hunting seasons.

Services are limited from November to early April, so be sure to bring ample supplies of firewood and water for your first night stay. The park store is open for visitor services on weekends and holidays (except Christmas), and water and firewood are available from the park staff.

Cross-country Skiing
Approximately 12 miles of trails are maintained for cross-country skiing on the lower slopes of Monadnock. These trails are ungroomed, and require a minimum of 16 inches of natural snow cover over the rolling and occasionally rocky terrain. The trails are considered intermediate, and skiers must bring their own equipment.

Winter Hiking
Winter hiking has gained popularity on Monadnock, making it a great place for experienced hikers to enjoy hiking, while not having to travel to more remote and untraveled trails. The main trails to the summit are often icy and may require use of special equipment. Snowshoeing to various points of interest is popular on many of the less traveled trails. Be sure to carry ample equipment to stay warm, and keep all members of your group safe. Please consult hikesafe.com for recommended equipment for winter hiking. Park Headquarters is the only maintained parking area during winter.
