FRANCONIA NOTCH STATE PARK - UPCOMING PROGRAMS

There will be no programming August 11 - August 24.

MONDAY, AUGUST 25
4:30pm: Old Forest Bike Tour.
  Explore the biodiversity of New Hampshire by joining Ranger Joe on a 2 mile bike tour of the old forest.  Learn about this fascinating ecosystem with several educational and interactive stops along the way. Great for all ages and especially families! Meet at the Hiker Information Cabin along the bike path. Duration: About 1 hour.

9pm: Abandon Your Sight and Plunge Into the Night.  The night holds many thrills once the sun goes down. Watch as your neighbor’s face disappears, hear tall tales of pirate booty, and engage in a show of miniature pyrotechnics. Do you have the courage to rely on only four senses? If you’re bold meet Ranger Joe at the Hiker Information Cabin and we’ll find out. Duration: About 1 hour. Fun for all ages.

TUESDAY, AUGUST 26
7pm: Campfire Stories.
  What better way to spend an evening camping than by sharing stories by a campfire? Join Ranger Joe for a safe fire starting and fire basics lesson as well as a reading of Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax. (Great for kids) Meet at the Hiker Information Cabin. Duration: About 30 minutes.

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 27
10am:  With Concious Decisions and Environmental Activism For All.
  Previously concerned with tweetles and beetles and tweetle beetle battles, This author approaches a subject for those more apt to act than babies with rattles, For he seeks to enlighten those who read, With a tale of barbaloots and a thing called a Thneed.  Come raise your awareness to environmental impacts.  Join us for a sampling of Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax.  See you at the Hiker Cabin.

9pm: Glaciers Galore in the Notch.  With stunning 1,000 ft cliffs, scored bedrock, and snow-capped peaks Franconia Notch is an innocent victim to nature’s imposing devices. Witness walls of ice devour the valley, watch as the melt water collects in shimmering pools and possibly encounter an old and upright sage as we trek through glacial history. Don’t be late to this riveting program at the Hiker Cabin.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 28
9pm: Moose - Dr. Frankenstein’s Creation or New Hampshire Native?
  With the tail of a deer, the beard of a turkey and the legs of a horse, Alces alces resembles a beast created in the laboratory of Dr. Frankenstein. Decide for yourself whether a moose is an evolutionary experiment gone wrong or the workings of Mother Nature at her best. Meet at the Hiker Cabin.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 29
12pm:  Impressionism at its Finest. 
Is that inner Picasso just itching to come out? Do you wish you could change your name to Van Gogh? If you could invite anyone in the entire world to dinner, would it be Monet? Can’t get Salvador Dali off of your mind? Join us for an imaginative hike and sketching session on the cliffs of Artist’s Bluff. Meet me on top of Artist’s Bluff.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 30
2pm: Animal Tracks and Signs.
  Animals, animals everywhere! But all they left were footprints. Become an animal detective and examine these prints to determine what animals have been in the area. Discover fun facts about the way animals move and the things that they leave behind. You can also make your own footprints to bring home as souvenirs using molds.  Join Ranger Joe at the Hiker Information Cabin in for this fun filled activity! Duration: About 40 minutes. Especially for kids.

7pm:  A Dinner Date Who’s Easy to Please: Bears and What They Eat.  Brown, black, polar or gummy, these forest foragers find quite a bit yummy. It’s berry time all summer and nuts in the fall, just wait until winter when there’s no food at all. Join me at the Hiker Cabin.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 31
Time TBA: Guided Hike/Trails.
  Join Ranger Joe to experience a guided hike in the park. Learn ecology and geology, to animals of the area, and a bit of history. Come along and explore the wonders of the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Meet at the Hiker Information Cabin at designated time. (Bring proper footwear and dress for the weather.) Duration: Anywhere from 1-3 hours. Hikes will be advertised throughout the park and will include trail difficulty info.
